Note: The majority of this walk falls within designated
Access Land owned by the National Trust. However, it is used throughout the
year for grazing and it is therefore important that dogs are kept on a lead.
The walk starts in the car park. Leave the
car park by any of the pedestrian exits and turn immediately right, skirting
the edge of the car park until you reach the picnic area in the southern
corner. Go south for 200m to the gate in the corner of the pasture. Go
through the gate and follow the track opposite for 350m to the Ridgeway
National Path.
Turn left along the Ridgeway, following it
for 650m until, just after passing the grassy embankments of Uffington
Castle, you come to a pedestrian gate on your left. Go through and continue
150m to the concrete trig point facing you. Once there, locate the track up
to the top of the embankment of Uffington Castle.
After a complete circuit of the
embankment, taking in the splendid views in all directions, return to the
trig point and, with your back to the Ridgeway gate, bear approx 10° right
and follow the path 200m to the top of the White Horse. Descend the slope,
keeping the Horse immediately on your left (please do not walk on the
Horse), and continue following the path as it bears slightly left down
towards Dragon Hill. Cross the road when you reach it and follow the
sign-posted path keeping Dragon Hill on your right (note: an 'ascent' of
Dragon Hill is optional).
After 170m, keep following the path as it
bears right down towards the B4507. In about 80m you will meet a fence. Turn
left and follow the fence line – keeping it on your right until you reach
the fence bordering the B4507. Turn sharply to your left and continue
walking with the road on your right. After 400m you will reach the corner of
the pasture. Turn left and, keeping the road to the car park on your right,
ascend the hill to back to the car park.
